James Tokley is known for his colorful sayings. Here are some of them:

  • "My endocrine system was a pharmacy. It was a corner drugstore." - explaining how he felt when an orchestra played Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" at Gov. Charlie Crist's inauguration.

  • "If I could be anything in the world, I wish I could be a lector in a Tampa cigar factory." To which, someone replied: "You already are."

  • "Words have tickled me all my days."

  • "If my intent outruns my lips, I intend to step down," explaining when he might give another poet a chance at being Tampa's poet laureate.
